Compatibilism and the Notion of Rendering Something False (B. Schnieder)

Published in Philosophical Studies 117 (2004), 409–28.

Abstract: The paper discusses Peter van Inwagen’s Consequence Argument, which crucially employs the notion of rendering a proposition false. The main aim of the paper is to shed light on that notion. While the explications offered so far are based on modal concepts, it is argued that a stronger, hyper-intensional concept is needed, namely the concept expressed by the word ‘because’. An analysis is developed which is superior to the prior ones. On the basis of that analysis it is explained why van Inwagen’s argument fails.
